But I saw the beauty in not expecting a huge armful of gifts and the TRUE surprise in a fun filled morning that he truly never expected. We got our first 'real' Christmas two Christmases ago. I'll hope that it comes for you too, in its own time. It is also what other children are doing around me which makes it seem fun. Let's do what all the other kids are doing. After awhile it usually occurs to me that much of what I want for my son is more about just that doing the "norm". We are not the norm, and really he could care less. His brain does not know that not wanting to see Santa is atypical. He is excited that there are gifts under the tree and he could care less what they are. He will love whatever he receives. Perhaps our special kiddos have the right idea. Live in the moment. All this anticiation of gifts, Santa, shopping that's not at all important. This day, these gifts, this moment is what he really loves.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077151913672187133.post-31202819303242183152013-12-24T15:44:01.299-08:002013-12-24T15:44:01.299-08:00Thank you for reminding me what Christmas really i...Thank you for reminding me what Christmas really is about on this Christmas Eve. My son also doesn't get Santa, and presents and Elf on the dam shelf, and it breaks my heart no end, but the one thing he does get in a HUGE way is LOVE, and thats something we can give him. God so loved the world that he sent his only son even when he knew the path that laid before him. He loved us that much. Much love and peace to your beautiful family. marie clarehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15102120046107159127noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077151913672187133.post-10173391887081775592013-12-24T09:32:47.758-08:002013-12-24T09:32:47.758-08:00I have never commented on a blog before, but I had...I have never commented on a blog before, but I had to thank you for your words today. This paragraph:

One thing I've gotten from attendng Church, is that Advent- the time we are in now leading up to the birth of little baby Christ- is a time for hopefulness. It's not a time for perfect, it's not a time for neurotic, it's not a time for family stress, it's not a time for heartache. It's simply a willingness to be hopeful...Even if you don't know quite yet what you are being hopeful for.

brought me to tears and helped to open my heart a little more to the season. I am struggling with infertility and have been having a hard time with Christmas this year, but I LOVE your thoughts on the advent. I feel peaceful and hopeful right now- what a gift!

Thank you again. You have a beautiful family- inside and out. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8077151913672187133.post-68810074440122110422013-12-24T08:16:30.511-08:002013-12-24T08:16:30.511-08:00So beautiful! This has been a challenging year for my family (with unexpected deviations from the "ideal" life path) and I have not been able to catch the Christmas spirit. Your words "hope" and "slow" stick with me. This year, my Christmas will be a time of hope and a time for slow. Christmas to us doesn...Blessed Christmas to you!
Christmas to us doesn't look like Santa and reindeer and Elf on the Shelf and twinkling lights. Advent and Christmas to my family looks like love - like time spent every evening reading a Christmas-themed book, reading some of the (biblical) Christmas story, and loving each other; like doing kind things for others; like giving of ourselves; like getting three gifts - one on St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6), one Christmas Eve (from Mama and Daddy), and one Christmas Day (we pull our names out of a hat and have $5 to buy or make a gift for that person) because Jesus got three gifts, and because we don't want to give our Spectrum kids sensory overload for Christmas. If my kids take anything away from Christmas, I want it to be that "He came down that we may have Love" like the song says.
